53rd New York Film Festival Announces Main Slate Offerings; ‘Brooklyn,’ ‘Carol’ and ‘Bridge of Spies’ Top List

The 53rd New York Film Festival has announced its main slate of feature film offerings, including new films from Steven Spielberg, Michael Moore and Guy Maddin. The fall festival will play home to the world premiere of Spielberg’s Tom Hanks-starring “Bridge of Spies,” a big budget blockbuster that will share the screen with new picks from directors as diverse as Miguel Gomes, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Yorgos Lanthimos and Rebecca Miller.
This new slate contains a number of offerings that have previously played at other festivals — such as Todd Haynes’ Cannes hit “Carol,” John Crowley’s “Brooklyn” and Michael Almereyda’s Sundance premiere “Experimenter” — along with titles that will make their debuts earlier in the season at other festivals, including TIFF, Venice and (presumably) Telluride. Michael Moore’s “secret” new film “Where to Invade Next,” which surprised cinephiles when it was announced as part of the TIFF slate, will also screen at NYFF. These titles join the festival’s previously announced opener (“The Walk”), closer (“Miles Ahead”) and centerpiece offerings (“Steve Jobs”).

Festival Director and Selection Committee Chair, Kent Jones said: “I could talk
about the geographical range of the films in the selection, the mix of artistic
sensibilities from Hou Hsiao-hsien to Steven Spielberg to Chantal Akerman, the
astonishments of Miguel Gomes’s three-part ‘Arabian Nights’ or Kiyoshi
Kurosawa’s heartbreaking ‘Journey to the Shore’ or Michael Almereyda’s
surprising ‘Experimenter,’ the points in common among the various titles,
but the only thing that really matters is how uniformly beautiful and vital
each of these movies are. If I were 17 again and I looked at this lineup from
far away, I’d be figuring out where I was going to stay in New York for two
weeks this autumn.”
NYFF will run from September 25 to October 11 this year. Tickets for the festival will go on sale in September.
